This was the final of the Stewards, Thames having already won a hard race against Magdalen College, Oxford. In the final, Percy Landale, st two was up against his younger brother, Walter, in the Trinity Hall boat - both were Cambridge Blues. Thames won easily but the Hall had their consolation prize when they won the Visitors' with the same crew.

Henley - after a race, 1893, showing the London and Thames houseboats

As this picture suggests, stray punts and pleasure steamers on the course were a regular hazard for competing crews. It was not until 1894 that the rules were changed to allow for re-rows 'if during a race a boat shall be interfered with by any outside boat.' Years later, the course was finally boomed to prevent the collisions that were still a frequent occurence.
