The winning 1911 Goblets Pair

In the semi-final, two Thames pairs met: Julius Beresford and Harrison Cloutte taking on Bruce Logan and Charlie Rought.

The Rowing Almanack records that 'A very fine race ended in a dead heat in record time 8m 8s. Afterwards Cloutte and Rought tossed to settle the result of the dead head, Beresford and Cloutte being the winners.'

The pairs tossed because three of them were in the Stewards four, which had also reached the final. The record set by these men was equalled twenty-seven years later but was not beaten until 1952, when one of the successful pair was another Thames oarsman, Tom Christie. There was a strong following wind on this occasion and Berry complained that records should not be allowed in such circumstances, asserting that they never had such helpful conditions in his day!

Despite Berry's memory, conditions were certainly fast in 1911, though in winning the final against Bruce and Gladstone of Christ Church by 1 1/2 lengths, they could not match the previous day's time, but they equalled Muttlebury's old record of 8m 15s.
