Juniors
See also: The junior club opened its summer fixture list with the Inter-regional
competition at Holme Pierrepont in early May. Our three boats were all
finalists, Ro Bradbury was a silver medallist in WJ14 singles, sister
Guen was 4th in the J16 event, Amy Munro Faure and Carly Diesen were fifth
in girls J14 quads with two Putney High girls, Roxy Minter and Alice Walpole.
There were some fine performances in some testing windy conditions. We fielded a wide variety of boats at Putney Town and won four events
ranging from WJ12 quads, through to WJ16 doubles. Guen Bradbury was particularly
impressive in Novice singles coming a close second to international Leonie
Barron in a closely fought final. Our girls from the J14 quad (see above)
did well to beat an older crew from the American School and won WJ15 quads.
The boys had a first go at summer regatta racing here on their home turf,
the J16 double of Tom Grob and Mitar Udovicki beating Latymer but falling
prey to a faster ASL combination. The J15 double of Josh Howitt and William
McCaig needs a little more finessing before it competes again.| At National Schools the Bradbury sisters teamed up together and were
semi finalists in WJ16 doubles. They did not progress to the finals, falling
victim to the lane draw rather than the other crews. They turned the tables
on rivals from Tideway Scullers later at Twickenham Regatta. The flying
Bradburys went on to win the restarted race after the two crews clashed.
At the same regatta a reconstituted boys J16 double of Mitar Udovicki
and Will McCaig reached the final. A similarly diverse bunch of juniors went to Reading. Josh Howitt had
his first try in singles at J15 level. Younger girls took part in the
special lunchtime races in J13 quads, Jo-jo Barry joining Alice Walpole,
Charlotte Penney and Flo Ware from Putney High, coxed by older sister
Lizzie Barry. The girls J14 quad came a very close second to Evesham. Meanwhile at Loughborough, no doubt boosted by the change to a better
boat, the Bradbury sisters came second in Novice doubles, having won the
WJ16 event in fine form. They reached the final of WS3 doubles at Richmond,
losing narrowly to Vesta. We will finish off with a small boats assault on Kingston Regatta and will be attending Molesey rather than National Championships as by then we shall be depleted by holiday commitments. Several of our squad will be attending the Eton Rowing Courses in late
July, club-based activity will cease for August and recommence in early
September. You can infer from this report that the scope of our junior activity
has broadened again this year. All our crews have benefited from training
alongside and with the Putney High squad (and vice versa). The PHS wins
list is equally extensive as a result of this liason. Special thanks to the coaching team, particularly Dave Baldwin, Leonie Barron, Polly Gough, Iain Pritchard, Pauline Rayner and John Williams whose collective enthusiasm for all things junior is a delight.
