Putney High School success summer 2003
On Saturday, the 10th of May a mixed crew of 3 Year
10’s and a Year 9 took part in the Hammersmith Regatta. It was the
first time the quad was rowing together and with a new Cox, it proved
successful as the girls won their 1200m-sprint race by more than 4 boat
lengths. It was lead by Eleanor Stoltsfuz and unusual crew of Milly Freeman,
Roxy Minter and Raeesa Chowdhury behind her, winning 4 silver tankards.
On Wednesday, the 14th of May, five more girls from
the rowing team travelled to Dorney Lake to take part in the Ball Cup,
a Small School’s Regatta. A J13 Double, a J14 Single and a further
two J15 singles took part in the competition. Alice Walpole and Charlotte
Penny came third in their J13 race, whilst Roxy Minter and Lucy Webb Wilson
came second in their J14 and J15 races. They were both awarded silver
medals. Captain of the J15 quad, Eleanor Stoltsfuz achieved first place
in her J15 singles race and won the gold medal. All the girls were awarded
competitor’s certificates and their respective medals.
On Saturday, the 17th of May, the rowers took part in
yet another Regatta in Putney. Girls of all ages raced various boats during
the day and accomplished victorious results. Alice Walpole and Charlotte
Penny won the J13 doubles competition, whilst Roxy Minter competed in
a J14 club quad against a J15 crew - their boat came first in their race.
Lucy Webb-Wilson also won her J15 singles race.
Following a line of rowing success, during the first weekend of the
half term, Putney High’s J15 Quad travelled to Nottingham for the
National School’s Competition. 24 crews from boat
clubs from all over the British Isles competed in this spectacular event.
On the 25th of May, Eleanor Stoltsfuz, Milly Freeman, Raeesa Chowdhury
and Lucy Webb-Wilson raced three 2000m races. They achieved 3rd place
in their heats to qualify for semi finals, where they went on to achieve
second place - their performance in the semi finals proved to be the second
fastest time for their age group on the day. The girls qualified for the
J15 Coxed Quad finals - they raced against the top schools in the country
and achieved a stunning 4th place, narrowly missing out on bronze medals.
To end the rowing season, the J15 quad raced on Saturday, the
21st of June at Marlow Regatta at Dorney Lake. Here, they rowed
a 1500m-sprint race and came only a foot behind Dame Alice Harper Boat
Club, who were silver medallists at Nationals. The time difference was
only a second and a half.
Congratulations to all of the school’s rowers
for an excellent season and their wonderful success. A special congratulations
to the J15 Quad, who competed consistently throughout the season and achieved
such success at Nationals.
