National Championships, Strathclyde Country Park 2003, Women's Eight

The Thames Womens Club VIII won a bronze medal, and the Pennant for fastest Womens Club Eight, at The National Championships in Strathclyde this weekend. It was an excellent result for Thames, who led the field at 500m and looked set to win the silver medal right up until the last 100m. In the event, they were piped to the post by the Globe composite crew (containing Thames member Emma James), who made a spectacular push at the last minute to take home a well deserved silver medal. Here is Rachel Quarrel's commentary: Race 569: Women's eights final Penultimate race of the day, University of London's strong composite eight with TSS/Kingston/Tideway likely to be favourites. Coming towards halfway they already have a length, with Thames in second and City of Oxford just ahead of the Upper Thames/Globe/London composite. Thames trying hard to stop UL/etc from getting away, UTRC/etc whisk past City of Oxford, UL can't be caught, UTRC could get past Thames, 100 to go. The UL/etc heavyweight composite, who are the closest thing we have to a development international eight, win gold, with the lightweight composite silver, and Thames bronze

Pairs Head of the River, 5 October 2002

The first major milestone of the season was held on a pleasantly dry and calm. The race was exceptionally well run and Thames fielded 7 men's boats and 6 women's crews. Thames started the season with two pennants, Stephen Dooley and James Silk rowing in a lightweight scratch combo won SII 2- and a svelte looking Chris George and N Keron won the Veteran's B/C/D 2- category and a share of one other with Pauline Rayner rowing in a Barnes Bridge LRC/Thames RC combination to win the Women's Veteran's 2x. Henley Women's Regatta, 22nd-23rd June 2002

As time goes on, Henley Women's Regatta is growing into an ever-better event, with an atmosphere all its own. The 15th running of the regatta was certainly one to remember for Thames with seven crews reaching finals (no first crew failing to do so) and four winning outright.

The Open Eight was a composite crew (featuring four Thames athletes: Emma James, Louise Carey, Helen Day and Emma Cowan) selected as the probable English eight for the Commonwealth Regatta. With only 3 crews entered, the draw meant that their hardest race was the semi-final against an Oxford Brookes crew including former internationals Alex Beever, Alison Trickey, Liz Henshilwood and Ali Gill. The Composite pushed away hard to open up a ¾ length margin, this was hauled back in the second half by Brookes but the Composite held their nerve to win by 2 feet. In the final they had no such problems with Tideway Scullers.

Guin Batten has had a difficult winter, coping with the effects of over-training but she looked very impressive over the weekend in Open Singles, pulling out easily verdicts against the domestic field with the minimum of fuss. She also found time to address the congregation at the rowers service in Remenham Church on Sunday morning. In the final Guin beat Liz Butler-Stoney of Wallingford by 4½ lengths. With luck this may herald a return to international competition.

Sarah Campbell was also supposed to be competing in Open Singles but unfortunately was defeated by the British rail system and failed to get on the water in time for her race. Hopefully, she will get another chance at Nat Champs.

The Club Eight were always strong favourites after their domination of Met and Docks. The path to the final was relatively straightforward, with X-Press, Auriol Kensingston 'C' and Twickenham 'B' not posing much of a threat. The second round did provide a stiffer test, however, in the form of St Andrew, containing many of the likely Scottish Commonwealth squad. Ironically, Pam Dixon (seven in the Thames eight) had had the option of rowing in this crew. St Andrew took a slight early lead, but were rapidly pulled back again, the eventual verdict being ¾ length.

In the final Thames met Auriol Kensington 'A'. AK have been itching for a head-to-head with Thames for some time and apparently felt that this was their year. Nevertheless, they found it impossible to match the Thames pace, and clear water was opening up as the crews passed the enclosure. The eventual verdict was 2 lengths. After near misses in 2000 and 2001, this was the first Club Eights win since 1999 and was earned in fine style.

The 'B' Club Eight, aka the Development Crew, were unfortunate not to survive the first round, suffering some steering problems off the start and going out to Aberdeen 'B' by 1½ lengths.

Charlotte Dalton of Thames and Pippa Wilson of Mortlake, Anglian & Alpha helped their case for Commonwealth selection with a win in Lightweight Double Sculls. In the final, they defeated Notts County, including one of last year's Thames squad, Fi Gibson, who is now back in Nottingham completing her degree. This was Charlotte's third Henley medal, and her second in Lightweight Doubles.

The Club Coxed Four had to deal with some strong opposition on the way to the final. In particular, their semi-final against Kingston was a humdinger, with Kingston almost having clear water at the Barrier, only for Thames to draw level through the enclosure and move into a 1½ length lead. This superlative effort perhaps took its toll in the final, where they were unable to reproduce the feat, losing to City of Oxford by 1 length.

The cruellest result of the weekend was certainly the final of the Lightweight Pairs. Jo Ganley and Leonie Barron have been in commanding form throughout this season. In the semi-final they dispatched Nottingham University to face Nottingham BC. Away from the quarter mile signal, with the crews level but Thames looking more composed, Nottingham were warned and Thames, perhaps naively, moved to avoid a clash. Jo then clipped a boom and almost immediately they were on to the pilings. They straightened and restarted as quickly as possible but by this stage were a good 4-5 lengths down. To roars from the enclosure they started making up this deficit. Had the race been over the full Royal Regatta course they very likely would have done it. As it was, they lost by 1 ½ lengths. It was clear though that the commentator, spectators and even their opponents realised which was the faster crew.

The Open Pair of Lucy Bowen (Thames) and Helen Austin (ULBC) also had some steering problems, but managed to keep off the booms. In the final they faced Osiris, the selected Under-23 pair. Although they were unable to take them, their row showed encouraging signs that both are returning to full fitness after long periods of injury.

In sum it was a splendid weekend for Thames, with 23 athletes reaching finals and 15 converting those races to medals. Over the 15 years of Women's Henley, Thames has now had 35 wins, a magnificent achievement. Our position at the head of British women's rowing is, for the moment, confirmed.

Inter-regional Championships, 21st April 2002
Holme Pierrepont, Nottingham - 2000 metres

Thames provided two crews for the Thames Lower region at the inter-regionals: a coxed four of Helen Day, Louise Engel, Louise Carey and Emma Cowan with cox Nicola Oddie and a pair, Leonie Barron and Jo Ganley. Both performed exceptionally well, the four winning outright and the pair taking second - not bad for a lightweight crew in a heavyweight division!

Mention should also be made of Fiona Gibson of Notts County, who won in the lightweight double scull. Fi was of course a highly successful member of Thames in 2000/1 during the 'sandwich' year of her degree. Now back in Nottingham to complete her studies, we hope to see her again should she move south on graduation.

British International Rowing, Final Assessment, 16th-17th April 2002
Hazelwinkel, Belgium - 2000 metres

The number of Thames competitors was unfortunately reduced for the final trials. Guin Batten was still unrecovered from a virus; meanwhile Lucy Bowen's back was still not quite ready - unfortunately the latter also kept Lucy's pairs partner Emma James off the water.

However, Elise Laverick and Kate Mackenzie did take part in the singles trial, while Ali Barnes raced in the pair.

In the singles time trial, Elise came a strong fifth, with Kate slightly further back in ninth. In the races, Elise was just pipped and came sixth in the final, while Kate came third in her semi-final.

In the pair, Ali, racing with Liz Butler-Stoney, came second overall.

Vesta International Veterans Head of the River Race, 24th March 2002

A motley selection of Thames crews took to the water for the 20th Vets' Head. Stars this year were the Vet C men, who won their division spectacularly. Also impressive were Pauline Rayner's all-stars, who trounced their opposition in Vet D women, and also beat all the Vet Cs and all but one of the Vet Bs. An honourable mention should go to the Veteran A Novice women, veterans in their first race!

Women's Head of the River Race, 9th March 2002

Sadly, on the advice of the PLA, the organisers were forced to cancel the event shortly before the start as a result of potentially dangerous weather. However, the British women's eight, coached by Miles Forbes Thomas and rowing is Imperial College/Kingston/Marlow/Thames did race over the course, clocking an unofficial 19:19 (including a brief stop at Hammersmith dur to launch wash) - a fast time in such nasty conditions.

Boustead Cup, 3rd March 2002
Putney to Mortlake

The Boustead Cup was retained by Thames, who beat London by just over half a length, after a closely fought race. London won both the second and third boats races.

Inverness Eights and Small Boats Head, 16th February 2002
(SARA Spring Assessment)

While most of the women's squad were engaged in seat-racing at Dorney Lake, Leonie Barron and Jo Ganley schlepped up to Inverness for the second SARA assessment, which took place as part of the Inverness Head.

The trip was a successful one, as they were the fastest pair, out of both heavyweights and lightweights. This would seem to place them in a strong position for selection as the Scottish Lightweight Pair for the Commonwealth Regatta.

British International Rowing, Third Assessment, 9th February 2002
Boston, Lincolnshire - 5000 metres

Boston was unwelcoming for the third set of winter trials, a fierce tailwind making rowing difficult and marshalling well-nigh impossible.

In the heavyweight singles Guin Batten and Elise Laverick were both absent, but Kate Mackenzie (7th) and Ali Barnes (9th) both put themselves in the bunch behind leaders Fran Houghton, Debbie Flood, Ali Mowbray and Sarah Winckless. Helen Day, trialling in a single for the first time, was pleased with a highly respectable 27th, while Emma James also forced to switch to a single in the last week following Lucy Bowen's injury (get well soon Lucy!) had to content herself with 37th.

In the pairs Jo Ganley and Leonie Barron held their second place, this time behind a much improved Oxford University pair. Emma Cowan and Louise Carey continued their steady move up the rankings, taking 3rd. A new pairing was that of Louise Engel of Thames and Carla Ashford of Oxford Brookes. After only 3 outings they took 7th, a great step up from Lou's pre-Christmas trials results. Also improved from the last trial were Jenny Pearce and Cherry Nolan who took 9th despite losing their rudder before the start. Meanwhile, Pam Dixon and Cat Cayley managed instead to badly twist their rudder in the marshalling area, leaving them with little steering and even less balance. Given their strong performance in the last trial, they were disappointed with their 11th place. Bringing up the rear were Tessa King and Laura Griffin, only back in a boat together recently, after Tessa's unlucky run of illness and injury.

In the lightweight singles, Charlotte Dalton was the only Thames competitor - she took a mid-table 19th.

Remenham Challenge, 20th January, 2002
Molesey - 3800 metres downstream

This year's hosts for the Remenham Challenge were Molesey, who also took the Men's Open event. This was perhaps unsurprising considering the amount of GB kit in evidence.

In blustery conditions, Thames had a pretty good day, taking the Men's Novice, Women's Open and Women's Intermediate divisions, and coming close in the Men's Intermediate and Women's Novice categories. The first Men's Veteran crew were the fastest vets overall, but lost the division in the handicapping.

Update 03/02/02 It was realised after the prize presentation that the organisers had confused Vesta's Senior 3 and (scratched) Novice entries. Thames were thus declared the Novice winners. Results below amended

SARA Winter Assessment, 19th January, 2002
Strathclyde - 2 x 2000 metres

Five of our Commonwealth triallists are part Scottish, so this weekend saw them make a quick trip to Strathclyde for the SARA trials. Conditions were not ideal, with a very strong crosswind. Results were, however, good - Jo and Leonie are mindful that another lightweight women's pair raced in the men's division and produced a slightly faster time in slightly faster conditions.

It is worth noting that the second placed Clydesdale pair contained former Thames oarswoman Elaine Law. Good to see that she is still delivering the goods.

British International Rowing, Second Assessment, 15-16th November 2001
Boston, Lincolnshire - 5000 metres

It was back to Boston for our Commonwealth hopefuls, for the second set of British trials. This time they were joined by Montana Butsch, back in the UK on a flying visit, and eager for a bit of racing. Thames regulars will remember that Monty spent the 99/00 season with the Club on a year away from his studies in the USA. He will be rejoining us some time in the new year.

Again, the British squad were in singles, and again Guin took victory with Elise not too far behind. Ali Barnes' great improvement since the first assessment is well worth a mention.

As for the Commonwealth girls - well, the results speak for themselves. Combined with a good set of results at the erg champs, the programme is looking very healthy. Well done to the athletes and to coach Tessa Millar.

British Indoor Rowing Championships, 18th November
National Indoor Arena, Birmingham

I haven't been able to talk to anyone for a report yet, but here are the results.

24/11/01 Update The event website now lists Thames as winners of the Club Women team event, so well done all. They also claim that OUWBC won the Championship Women team event. However, they seem to have ignored Helen, Lou and Ali's results, and by my maths if they had included them, we would have won. I've emailed them to inform them of the mistake, so with luck we should shortly be installed in our rightful place!

On 24th November, BBC Grandstand had a short feature on the erg champs. The coverage was mostly focused on the internationals, especially Pinsent and Cracknell's epic head-to-head. However, Cherry could be spotted in the second row behind Kath Grainger and there was a smashing shot of Leonie making her 'war face'!

It has also come to my attention that Thames did have one male representative. Slims stalwart George Elkington competed to win a bet and posted a highly respectable score (see below). Well done to him.

1/12/01 Update I have been informed of another male TRC athlete at the champs: Mike Casfikis who scored 6:46.1 in the Open Lightweight Category.

Several emails and phone calls to Concept 2 have revealed the reason why Helen, Lou and Ali had their results ignored in the team competition. It's because the rules dictated that all entries needed to be made in the same club name; it seems these three entered as 'Thames' while everyone else went for 'Thames RC'. Concept 2 apparently couldn't be sure that 'Thames' and 'Thames RC' are the same club (!) and they're not prepared to change the result. Hmmmm....

Veteran IVs Head of the River Race, 11th November 2001

For the first time the Fours Head had a veteran counterpart this year and Thames was well represented.

On the men's side, we did very well coming second in the C4- (beaten by a very loaded ex international Walbrook crew) and second in the B4+ to Quintin. Just as impressive was the fact that our second B4+ didn't come last despite being deliberately rammed and ending up parallel to Barnes Bridge. The B4- took third, but were overtaken by the C4-!

As for the women, both Lesley Baguley (C4+) and Pauline Rayner (D4x) were in action in composite crews, and both won their categories.

Thanks to Charlotte Steel for informing me of the details.

Fullers Head of the River Fours, 10th November 2001

And so we come to the first major milestone of the season. The Fours' Head was cancelled last year due to a dangerously strong stream in the previous week. This year there were no such problems: the day was bitterly cold, but conditions were bright, dry and calm. The stream seemed relatively slow but there was little chop on the water and some relatively fast times were achieved.

Thames had 14 entries: 5 men's coxless fours, 4 men's coxed fours, 1 women's quad, 2 women's coxless fours and 2 women's coxed fours.

Captain Will Pressley continued his habit of coming second by small distances as his Senior 1 coxless four was edged out by Isis by 1.15 seconds.

The Men's Senior 3 coxed four of Stephen Dooley, Laurence Sandral, Jon Edwards, Colm McQuistan and cox Raf Carbonell did triumph however, taking their division by 19 seconds.

The top two women's boats were a coxless four and a coxed four, formed from four of the Boston trial pairs. The coxless four of Leonie Barron, Jo Ganley, Cat Cayley and Pam Dixon dominated their division, taking it from Cambridge University by 49 seconds. Not to be outdone the coxed four of Emma James, Lucy Bowen, Louise Carey and Emma Cowan, with cox Mostyn Goodwin also took their division, in a time that would have given them second place in the coxless division!

Thames also took a quarter share in the third Women's Elite pennant. A national squad quadruple scull of our own Elise Laverick, Rebecca Romero of Kingston and Lisa Eyre and Katherine Grainger of Marlow took the Women's Elite Quads division, holding off a strong challenge from another squad boat, racing as Leander.

On to the erg champs.

British International Rowing, First Assessment, 20-21st October 2001
Boston, Lincolnshire - 5000 metres

Twenty Thames athletes made the trip up to Lincolnshire for this winter's first set of trials. The results were generally very positive.

Our sole male representatives were Will Pressley and Paddy Ryan, who closed the gap on many of their rivals from the Pairs' Head and came a highly respectable 13th of 23.

The women's singles division was a large one (53 entrants), containing as it did virtually all the national squad athletes and a high number of club scullers. Guin Batten won the division, with Elise Laverick 6th and Ali Barnes 18th. Lesley Baguley and Laura Griffin both finished slightly further back

Lucy Bowen and Emma James confirmed what we already suspected: they are currently faster than all bar the squad athletes in pairs. Just as impressive was the third place for Jo Ganley and Leonie Barron, a superb position for a lightweight pair amongst heavyweights. In fact, all women's pairs acquitted themselves well.

Head of the Charles Regatta, 20-21st October 2001
Boston, MA, USA

Meanwhile, a coxed four of Aimee Di Marco, Alex Murray, Jenny Humphreys, Cherry Nolan, Cox Mostyn Goodwin and coach/supporters club Alex Duncan nipped off to Boston for the weekend to take part in the largest series of Head races in the world. As an international entry, they were put into the Championship Division alongside the US, German and Danish national squads, so winning was never really an issue. They finished 23 out of 31, but were certainly not wildly off the pace. More importantly however, they flew the flag (see the Tideway Slug for details) and had a good time.

Pairs' Head of the River Race, 13th October 2001

In contrast to last year's torrential rain, this year's Pairs' Head saw bright sunshine and good conditions. Thames started the year well with one pennant win and several encouraging results.

Top honours went to international Elise Laverick and her Kingston doubles partner Rebecca Romero who took Elite Women's Doubles by a clear 14 seconds. In Men's Senior 1 Pairs, Captain Will Pressley and Paddy Ryan missed out on the pennant win by 0.8 seconds, but should be pleased with a strong performance. Also impressive were Emma James and Lucy Bowen in Women's Elite Pairs, beating an Under 23 UL pair, and only losing out to national squad members Nicole Scott and Helen Fenoulhet. Your webmaster was dutifully snapping photos from Chiswick Bridge; the results should be up later this week.

1/12/01 Update I am told that, for technical reasons Scott and Fenoulhet were ineligible for the elite division - so the win goes to Emma and Lucy.
